Successful Closing Conference of the ELLpH Project

On June 12, 2026, the closing conference of the ELLpH collaborative project took place. The event focused on key findings from the project, which addressed various issues related to private universities. The conference offered interested individuals from the research and professional communities the opportunity to gain insights into the research findings and discuss them together.
The program began with a keynote address by Dr. Alexander Mitterle titled “How Unique Are Private Universities? The Origins, Differentiation, and Transformation of the Private Higher Education Sector in Germany.” The presentation provided a historical context for the development of private universities and highlighted key dynamics and changes in the German higher education system.
Following this, the three subprojects presented their key findings. The presentations provided a concise overview of the various research questions, methodological approaches, and findings developed as part of the project.
A special focus was then placed on mutual exchange. In a World Café format, participants discussed selected findings at three thematic tables, each of which addressed key areas of focus within the subprojects. The open discussion rounds provided space for in-depth discussions, the exchange of experiences, and joint reflection on possible follow-up questions and ways to apply the project results. At the same time, the format fostered networking among the various stakeholders from research and practice.
The conference concluded with a hybrid panel discussion titled “Different Missions, Different Innovations? Teaching in Private HEIs in Germany.” The discussion brought together different perspectives on teaching and innovation in the private higher education sector and provided further impetus for engaging with the project’s findings. Members of the project advisory board, who have accompanied the project over the past few years, participated in the panel discussion.
The closing conference thus provided a dynamic setting to present key findings of the ELLpH project, reflect on them collectively, and develop new perspectives for future research and practice. The project team would like to extend its sincere thanks to all participants for their interest, the stimulating discussions, and their active participation in the event.
